Membership of a retirement fund gives you the opportunity to save tax efficiently in a structured and regulated environment, where you will reap the following benefits:

  • Accumulated growth, which means the “snowball effect” of earning growth not only on contributions but also, on growth already earned,
  • Economies of scale, which means that you stand to gain from better investment opportunities and lower costs because you are pooling your investment with a large group of members instead of doing it on your own, and
  • Tax incentives through the Exempt – Exempt – Taxable principle which applies to a pension fund and wherein your contributions are tax deductible (within limits set by legislation), growth earned in the fund is tax free and benefits are taxable when these become payable.

Sentinel has structures, resources and products in place that offers you the opportunity to effectively provide for the day you can no longer work to support yourself and your dependents. The widely accepted goal is for you to save enough during your working career to replace your salary with a pension of around 75% of final salary.

The “recipe for success” lies in a combination of the following:

  • A responsible mind-set that will treasure these savings for “the day when I can no longer work”,
  • A good understanding of the Fund, the products and services it provides, and the options available to you,
  • A savings term of at least 35 years,
  • Monthly contributions towards retirement throughout your working career of at least 15% of your salary, and
  • Investment returns of around 6% above inflation over the long term.

Sentinel is one of only a few retirement funds that provide an in-house default annuity option to members upon reaching retirement. Our ‘cradle to grave’ model supports a seamless and costless transition from being a member to becoming a pensioner in the Fund.

At retirement, members have costless access to the in-house Pension Income Choice Model and retirement benefit counselling, to assist them in exercising an option. This model offers a wide range of annuity options within the Fund including a with-profit guaranteed annuity that provides spouse pension and term-certain guarantee options, and also a living annuity option. The Sentinel default annuity at retirement, in terms of Regulation 39, is a with-profit guaranteed annuity that includes a 75% spouse pension provision (if applicable) and a five-year term-certain guarantee period.

Whenever it suits you!

Through the Sentinel secure portal, members who have registered, have 24/7 access to their Sentinel member account, and can access communication, previous benefit statements and daily updated investment values!

BENEFITS PROVIDED

Benefits become payable when active membership ceases (you leave the service of your employer) or when Paid-up membership is terminated. All benefits are paid in terms of the Rules of the Fund and are subject to income tax. The following benefits are provided by the Fund:
